On January 5, 2021, Ambassador Sun Gongyi received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Kawaguchi Shuichiro, newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to Mauritius, at the Chinese Embassy.

Ambassador Sun Gongyi congratulated Ambassador Kawaguchi Shuichiro on his new assumption of office, saying that the Chinese Embassy is ready to strengthen exchanges and establish friendly working relations with its Japanese counterpart. Ambassador Kawaguchi Shuichiro expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Sun Gongyi for taking the time to meet him, lauding the work done by Ambassador Sun Gongyi as dean of the diplomatic corps. He expected to maintain close communication with Ambassador Sun Gongyi as well as the Chinese Embassy.

The two sides also exchanged views on topics of common concern, including the MV Wakashio oil spill.
