According to the news on the website of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, Chinese Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan and Mauritian Ambassador in China Lee Hon Chong signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on behalf of the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Mauritius on 17 October 2019.
The China-Mauritius FTA is the 17th FTA signed by China as well as the first FTA between China and a country of the African continent. It will not only provide a stronger institutional guarantee for deepening the economic and trade relations between the two countries, but also give a new connotation to the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Africa, promoting China-Africa economic and trade cooperation to a new height and opening up new prospects.
The China-Mauritius FTA negotiations were officially launched in December 2017. Under the guidance of the leaders of both countries, the two sides formally concluded negotiations on 2 September 2018 after four rounds of intensive negotiations. The agreement covers goods trade, service trade, investment, economic cooperation, and so on, achieves the goal of "comprehensiveness, high level and mutual benefit".
After the signing of the agreement, the two sides will respectively implement due procedures for the formal entry into force so that the FTA can come into effect as soon as possible, benefiting the enterprises and people of both countries at its earliest time.
